The Baptism of the Lord

The Baptism of the Lord

1The Baptism in the Jordan

The Christmas season officially ends with the Feast of the Baptism of Jesus Christ.

This year, this feast reminded me of the importance of the sacrament of baptism.

It brought to mind my own baptism and what it means today.

We can see that the institution of this sacrament began with Jesus being baptized himself and then at the ascension when he told the disciples to go baptizing “in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit”.

We wonder why was it necessary for Jesus to be baptized?

After all he is God!

The answer to that question is easy. As we know through every gospel reading Jesus led his people by example.

Jesus would not want us to be baptized without himself being baptized.

Sunday, our priest reminded us that our baptism unites us to the mystical body of Jesus.

We are welcomed into God’s church at the moment of our baptism and yet so many of us will still stray.

An author meditating on this feast made the comment that as parents we would be doing our children an injustice if we did not “rush” to have our children baptized immediately.

During the early part of the calendar year, the liturgy makes it a point to show us that baptism is important!

Jesus is being baptized.

While all the “new” things about the year are still fresh in our minds, the Church invites us to contemplate our own baptism through this feast.

We are called to contemplate whether by our baptism God can say to the heavenly courts of each one of us “This is my beloved son/daughter , with him I am well pleased.”
