The First Friday of the Year

The First Friday of the Year

John_The_BaptistAlthough this First Friday is almost coming to an end, I wanted to share with you some of the things that our priest talked to us about this morning.

Every First Friday at the 9am Mass there is Benediction in our parish.

This morning being the first Friday of the year the church was packed!

It seemed that people came from everywhere to celebrate Mass this morning.

But the beautiful thing is what was said.

The priest reminded us that God is everywhere!

He always likes to tell stories.

So he reminded us that in today’s gospel – those who questioned John the Baptist were sent by the religious!.

He noted that we should think about how it is that they had to go out to John.

Although John was bringing a message of God, he did not belong to the religious group of the day.

And it is here that our priest zoned in on.

He said that we have to remember that it isn’t always in the Church or in Religion that we will find God.

My own story is testimony to that.

God is truly everywhere!

God can be found in your drunk uncle,

He can be found in the person who is always mean to you.

He can be found in your brother, aunt, uncle, cousin who no longer goes to Church.

The spirit of God moves in and through everyone and everything.

Sometimes we are too quick to judge and focus on the negative aspects of someone’s life.

We don’t notice all the good that these people do.

We don’t see how they go out everyday and give $5.00 to the poor person on the street.

We don’t see how they will help someone move their apartment in one day.

sacredheartWe don’t see how they help a child their homework.

So we should never be too quick to judge.

This first Friday, as we asked the Sacred Heart of Jesus to Have mercy on us, we should strive to be more open

and more compassionate to those around us.

We never know who is “unknown” to us who will be the one to bring salvation.
