The gifts of the Holy Spirit

The gifts of the Holy Spirit

Yesterday we celebrated the feast of Pentecost.

Attending our Parish yesterday, if you walked in and had no idea that it was Pentecost Sunday, you certainly would have left knowing very well that it was.

I have never been more moved on this Feast Day than I was yesterday.

Never have I heard so many hymns and songs to the Holy Spirit as I did yesterday.

The one thing I remember from yesterday’s homily had nothing to do with my topic for this week, it had more to do with our reaction to the Holy Spirit.

Very often we call upon the Holy Spirit –

asking the Holy Spirit for guidance, for help, asking for an increase in the very gifts we receive at Baptism and Confirmation.

What we don’t seem to realize is that

The Spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.

The Holy Spirit is always willing to come to our aid, but are we always ready to respond to the inspirations given by the Spirit.

Very often you will know deep within your heart what God is calling you to do.

He sends the Holy Spirit among us, for us to put these inspirations into action and we so very often neglect those callings.

We tell the Spirit come and then we go.

We ask the Spirit for help then we go and seek it elsewhere.

We need to humble ourselves.

As was mentioned last week while we used St. Josemaria Escriva’s homily to prepare for the coming of the Holy Spirit – we must be docile to the inspirations.

We must humble ourselves as did our Blessed Mother in order to receive the Holy Spirit and be able to bear the fruit that we so desire.

I pray that during the next few days you not only learn about what the gifts of the  Holy Spirit are,

but that you allow that same Spirit to enter into your soul and welcome those gifts in order to make a real difference in your daily lives.
