Why You should Read I am Catholic

I Am Catholic – the Paths We All Take

How did I Am Catholic come to be.

Well I am NOT a writer – let’s get that straight.

I didn’t major in English, Journalism or Literature.

I majored in Engineering.

Every time I asked my professor who to spell engineer he would laugh and say engineers don’t spell we design!

That’s the background I was coming from.

I hated to read when I was growing up.

Books were to present solutions to problems.

That was my thinking on it.

I didn’t read anything that was NOT deemed important to my education – i.e. novels

And I did not read text books in full.

I was a master skim reader.

I remember one year a math teacher telling me to sit and READ the Math text book.

I told him, you don’t READ a math text book you highlight and take notes.

He told me to read.

So I read.

It’s interesting what you can find in a text book if you take the time to read it.

That’s when my journey of writing began.

I started writing when I began to read!

Writing about my Faith

After reading my math text book thoroughly I decided to pick up some books on my faith.

After all I had questions and I needed answers.

I would read and summarize, I would read and then ask questions.

My writings turned into questions, sometimes in the form of poetry, other times in the form of a conversation with myself on paper!

Questions that were not being answered by those who I thought should have the answers became my main topic for writing.

Eventually I turned to more books.

This time they won’t all Catholic sources,

These books lend me to other books written by people who had little regard or respect for God.

Then one day I was sitting in a park on campus and the strangest thing happened.

A squirrel approached me. Yes a Squirrel!

Squirrels usually run.

But you see I was reading one of those books, and I was thinking deep and hard about whether or not God existed.

The squirrel came closer.

I had some nuts on the mat I was sitting on.

I picked them up and put my hand towards the squirrel.

He reached out with his little paws and took the nuts.

Then he came closer and started helping himself.

It was then that I looked up from the book I was reading and looked around me.

I was in a garden,

then sun was shining brightly that day,

The trees in full summer bloom

The sky look as clear as ever

Birds were doing the happy dance from tree to tree

and a squirrel was sitting next to me eating my snack of nuts!

That’s when I realized that God does exist!

That’s when I realized that I couldn’t find the existence of God in the books I was reading.

God’s very creatures showed me God.

From that point on I would read many more books that would bring me back home!

Rome Sweet Home

The Faith Explained –

Screw-tape Letters –

Chronicles of Narnia

The Alchemist

This was the beginning (sort of) of I am Catholic – the Paths We all Take.

You see during my own journey I had started to meet many others on similar journeys

Rather than writing my questions in my books now,

I was writing about them and their journeys

(as well as my own)

It was sort of a little journal.

I would keep these journals for almost 5 years before I decided it was time to put fingers to keyboard and start to write a book!

A Short and Sweet Story of Different People’s Journeys’ Towards Living Their Faith

Again because I wasn’t a big reader, I decided to keep it short and sweet!

Especially for those who were probably like me –  Hate Reading!

My book of choice is still one less than 200 pages,

Less than 100 if I can find one!

But I didn’t want to write so much and just miss the point.

Engineers tend to be very precise.

And this is how I Am Catholic is written.

An Engineer who is Catholic and who wants to share a few stories.

I am Catholic shows you how very normal, regular, everyday people can struggle to be Catholic.

How we are not all called to be in an convent or be a priest – but through every ordinary action – We can live our Catholic Faith.

I hope you enjoy reading your copy of I am Catholic – The Paths We All Take.
