The Sacraments – Holy Matrimony

The Sacraments – Holy Matrimony

Although nearly every person wants to get married to their prince or princess and have children, I believe that very few understand the deep significance about what they are entering into.

First and foremost, although many in the world today do not prescribe to this belief, Marriage is a vocation from God.

The Sacrament of Holy Matrimony signifies the union of Christ and the Church. It gives spouses the grace to love each other with the love with which Christ has loved his Church –CCC 1661.

The marriage convenant, by which a man and a woman form with each other an intimate communion of life and love, has been founded and endowed with its own special laws by the Creator. By its very nature it is order to the good of the couple, as well as to the generation and education of children. – CCC 1660

We have heard many times at a wedding ceremony the words, “what God has brought together let no man put asunder”.

How is it then that even after making a promise to Most High God, that we can ever take lightly this sacred sacrament and duty that has been given to you.

For married couples if you look at your marriage as a source of grace these are the fruits that spring from this sacrament :

  1. The grace to love each other with the love with which Christ has loved his Church
  2. A perfecting of your human love
  3. A strengthening of your indissoluble unity of the sacrament
  4. Santicitation on your way to heaven
  5. The grace to “help one another to attain holiness in your married life and in welcoming and educating your children”
  6. An integration into God’s covenant with man:Authentic married love is caught up into divine love. (The Daily Roman Missal – section How to be a better Catholic)

When we read and understand the fruits of this sacrament we can see clearly that marriage is a specific and particular vocation.

There are many who although marriage may be their vocation do not approach marriage this way, as such they fall into the temptations that have caused so many of our marriages in this world to fall apart.

Priest often tell young couples on their wedding day some version of this statement – “you are not here to get married to each other. You are both her together getting married to God”

In other words a marriage isn’t just a promise between husband and wife, it is in fact the promise that husband and wife make to God to serve Him through their marriage.

How many more marriages will survive if the spouses took this simple approach to their married life.

We also read from the Daily Roman Missal – that because marriage between the baptized is both a covenant and a sacrament The Catholic Church has the right to establish laws regarding the validity of marriages.

I have heard many people, even Catholics protest to some of these laws,

but it must be made clear that these laws are in place in order to ensure that men and women entering into this covenant are provided with every necessary means by which they are able to fulfill their vocation in marriage and keep the covenant they made with our Heavenly Father.

The Cathecism of the Catholic Church also touches on many aspects of marriage that will give us all a better understanding of sanctity of this Sacrament and its great importance in our human history.
