Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God
Today we celebrate and honor Mary, the Mother of God.
It is rare that we do truly consider the fact that Mary is in fact the Mother of God.
For those of you who don’t know why you go to church on New Year’s Eve or New Year’s day, here is the reason.
I had a friend who came up to me some years ago and asked me why do we go to church for New Year’s Day.
As I didn’t have the answer at the tip of my tongue, I did what any “staunch” Catholic would have done.
I went and pulled out my Missal and checked the date.
Sure enough I found the reason.
Somehow when we’re young and going to church every Sunday and every Feast day,
we don’t seem to remember OR we’re just not taught fully why we’re there in the first place.
I was in my twenties when I discovered the real reason for attending Mass on New Year’s Day.
This feast reminds us of the recently celebrated Nativity Feast.
It reminds us that our God and Savior was born of a woman.
For many Christians this fact eludes them as soon as Jesus is born.
We are taught that Jesus was born of a woman, but few Christians contemplate this Woman the way we should.
Mary was and is the Mother of God the Son. When the Word (Jesus) became flesh it was through Mary’s “fiat” that she became His Mother and our Mother as well.
We Catholics honor our Mother Mary at various times during the Year,
but on this first day of the New Year we honor her for being the first human being to welcome Jesus into her life and become His mother, thereby opening the gates of heaven to all.

November 30, -0001A lovely post, and gentle reminder of the Mother figure which is so comforting to so many. While I am not Catholic, I enjoy and respect the rituals and the beautiful ceremonies when I have attended mass with friends.
